Doctors like Dr. John Douillard who has turned to Ayurveda, an alternative form of medicine from India, recommends sleeping on your left side to get the healthiest sleep.
Experts in medical and science say that sleeping on the left side of your body is the best position to have a comfortable and healthy way to sleep.
Below are three important health issues that would be greatly improved by getting a full night’s sleep on your left side.
1. Spine and breathingleft-side-lower-back-pain
Sleeping on the left side is the least harmful position on your spine and it is also the best at providing optimal air flow for your lungs. Sleeping on your back puts too much pressure on the upper back and your hips, and often leaves your lower back in a suspended state. While, sleeping on your stomach strains both your lower back and your neck. Unless you take specific measures to ensure proper positioning while you’re asleep, you should stick to your side.
2. Lymph
The lymphatic system is probably the biggest winner in sleeping on the left side because majority of the system are located on the left side of your body. Therefore when you sleep on your left side, you’re allowing gravity to do its job and take some of the pressure of lymph drainage away from your heart and your spleen which are both located on the left hand side of your body.
3. Digestion
Sleeping on your left side will help your large and small intestines process food waste faster. The food will travel more swiftly from your small intestine to your large and then out. A 10 minute rests lying on your left side after eating is recommended for easy food digestion. This also helps combat dreaded food comas.
However despite the benefits of sleeping on the left side of the body, experts warned people that forcibly changing your sleeping habits would do more harm than good.
