On February 10, 1840, Victoria wore a lacy white gown with an orange blossom wreath for her wedding to Albert – despite members of the court questioning her colour choice.

 

The dress turned out to be a massive hit, and soon other women were choosing Victoria-inspired dresses for their big day.

And THAT’S where the belief that we’ve always worn white on weddings to symbolise purity comes from.

We reported it over the weekend that there was confusion in Delta State on Saturday as a wedding reception ended half-way, following a bride’s pronouncement that she was no longer interested in the few-hours-old marriage.

The 41-year-old jilted groom, simply identified as Julius, is finding it difficult to understand why his ‘wife’abandoned her marital vows midway into their wedding, shouting ‘I am no longer interested,’ at the wedding reception in Udu Local Government Area of Delta State.

It was gathered that all pleas by the bewildered husband at the popular Orhunwhorhun Road for the woman to reconsider her decision were to no avail as the dazed husband, guests and bridal train ran after the bride, caught up with her at a popular road, where all pleas for her to reconsider her decision and return to the reception venue fell on deaf ears.

The shocking incident which took place on Saturday, October 29, saw the would-be bride, Roseline, 32, disappeared into thin air and all efforts to trace her whereabouts had yielded no result at press time.

Speaking exclusively to Vanguard, a close female confidant of the woman, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said:

“I believe she did what she did because she saw the previous man in her life at the reception. We heard that he had earlier promised to marry the bride, but he later travelled to Lagos and never showed up again. 

 

“When the bride waited for a long time and he (former suitor) was nowhere to be found, she decided to marry another man, who was ready although she still loved her former suitor. 

 

“So when her true love showed up at the reception without notice, the woman saw him and decided to call it quits with her husband to follow her heartthrob.”

You have not featured in any movie since you got married. Why?
I have not worked in any production after marriage because I have been busy in my primary duties as a wife and mother. I need adequate time to build a solid foundation for my family and for a sustainable home. And I hope to be back in no distant time.

As a married woman, would you accept any role that comes your way now?
As a married woman a lot of things change in your life. Of course, you must have some sense of responsibility in decision making, because it is not just about your life anymore, you have a family to take care of. So, for the respect I have for my head, who is my husband and my neck, who is my son, I can’t play certain roles anymore. And I don’t have any regrets because my family comes first.

How are you enjoying motherhood?

Surprisingly, I have embraced the role of motherhood with ease, grace and love. Motherhood is a learning process which I am developing each day. By the special grace of God, I must say I am a fantastic mother to my son.

What do you enjoy most being a mother and wife?
(Smiles) I am enjoying every bit of the experience. It has been a wonderful journey. To the glory of God I am thankful for the love I receive and also give. It is priceless. In fact, I am in love with my husband and son.

There is a wrong belief by some that marriage is a prison. How would you describe yours?
Marriage is a blessing! It’s a new phase and level in life. Marriage from my point of view is awesome if you marry the right person. It is hell if you marry the wrong person. You will hear different stories from different folks. For me, I am waxing stronger and happier in marriage.

My Husband Lied He Was A ‘Businessman’, After Marriage I Found Out He Sells Popcorn – Woman Tells Court

One Margaret Agwu, on Friday, sought the dissolution of her 33-year-old marriage to her husband, Onu, at an Igando Customary Court in Lagos.

She lamented that her husband sometimes strips her naked and beats her to pulp and narrated how her husband deceived her and her parents and paid just N600 as her bride price when she was still 12 years old.

The trader told the court, “When I was 12 years old, my husband came to my village to ask for my hand in marriage. “He also lied to my parents that he was a businessman and that he owned a provision store and that he lived in a flat.

“My parents told him that they cannot release me for marriage because I was too young and besides I was still schooling. “Onu told my parents that he will send me to school after the marriage, my parent agreed and he paid the bride price.

“When I got to his house, I discovered that he was staying in one-room apartment, selling popcorn at the roadside. “He also refused to fulfill his promise of sending me to school. “He once punched me in my stomach and I lost my first pregnancy after a fight. I have lived every minute of my life in fear but I cannot go back to my parents because of the bride price.

“My husband absconded with our five children 16 years ago. When I called him after he packed out, he just told me that he was no longer interested in the marriage and since then he refused to pick my calls. “His relations told me he relocated with the children to Port-Harcourt. It is 16 years now that I have not seen nor heard from them.

“I heard that my husband gave our first daughter’s hand in marriage without my knowledge and that she had given birth to a son,” she sobbed, urging the court to help her return the N600 bride price paid by her husband and dissolve the marriage.

“I am no longer in love and I want to move on with my life,” she added.

Onu, was however, called on telephone by an official of the court and he said the petitioner was no longer his wife.

Passing his judgement, the President of the court, Mr. Adegboyega Omilola, said that it was obvious that the marriage had hit the rocks.

Omilola said, “Throughout the duration of this case, the respondent refused to honour court summons, therefore, the court has no other choice than to dissolve the union.

“The marriage between Margaret Agwu and Onu Agwu is hereby dissolved from today, both parties are no longer husband and wife. “Both are free to go their separate ways without any hindrances and molestation,” the president ruled.
